A day forever etched in the history of the fire service took a heartbreaking turn during a live firefighting training exercise at an old farmhouse in Milford. On that tragic day, we lost three brave individuals, including Robert Gregory, just 33 years old, from Highland Township. Robert was so much more than a firefighter; he was a devoted Boy Scout den leader, nurturing the curiosity and growth of young minds, a diligent Novi bus driver who safely carried children every day, a proud member of the National Rifle Association, a dedicated veteran, and above all, a loving husband, father, son, brother, and dear friend to many. The intent of the training exercise was to conduct controlled burns using gasoline and other accelerants such as stove fuel and kerosene. Regrettably, this method violated NFPA guidelines that advise against using gasoline, which can lead to rapid and uncontrollable fire conditions. The exercise aimed to prepare firefighters with the skills necessary to recognize signs of arson, gain valuable experience in interior structural firefighting, and learn to use Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) safely. Tragically, Robert was on the second level of the farmhouse when fire flashed on the first floor, unleashing unbearable heat and dense smoke leaving him trapped above without any visual. His only means of escape was through a window. The courageous rescue efforts of his fellow firefighters were met with challenges caused by the intense heat and thick smoke, which rendered visibility nonexistent. In honor of Robert and his sacrifice, a memorial plaque is placed on the wall outside of the training center, a lasting reminder of his commitment and bravery, at Highland Twp Station One. Additionally, the Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial Monument, Stone 7, Row 23, in Oakland County stands as a heartfelt tribute, ensuring that the memories of Robert and all those we lost that day will forever resonate in our hearts and serve as a reminder of their dedication and sacrifice.
